Grissel Hay Lodging House
This impressive house was probably built in the third quarter of the 18th century. It has the distinction of having been home to a number of practicing physicians. Dr. Archibald Blair and his son, Dr. James Blair, were the first homeowners of the property. Records indicate that it was rented to Dr. John Baker. In 1763, the property was purchased by Dr. Peter Hay, a local apothecary, who was possibly the builder of the house. His will left the house to his wife, Grissell Hay, who operated a lodging house there until her death. In 1768, the house was by yet another physician and druggist, Dr, George Gilmer. Even though it was an antebellum addition, restoration architects retained the house
