George Wythe House
This impressive home with its prestigious address near the Governor's Palace was home to one of the founding fathers of our nation, George Wythe. Wythe signed the Declaration of Independence and served on the First Continental Congress. But perhaps his greatest contribution lay in his skills as an educator. He was a brilliant scholar and beloved mentor to many young leaders including Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe, John Marshall and Henry Clay. In his later years, the revered old gentleman enjoyed nothing more than gathering his protégés in his library for spirited debates on science, philosophy and politics. In 1939, architects restored this Williamsburg landmark to its original 18th-century appearance. Today, it stands as testament to proportion, restraint and the ideals of classical architecture.
